Our Fall 2014 Classes

Fall is officially here and, just in the nick of time, so are our classes! Classes marked with a ⊗ would be a good choice for adventurous new knitters. Those marked with a ♥ make great gifts – if you can bear to part with them!

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER:

♥ JEMMA COWL with Carolyn Kern
Saturday, September 27; 10:30 am-12:30 pm
Jemma_by_AnnFee: $40 plus materials
Carolyn’s original design Jemma is a lace cowl with picot edging that gets its graceful tapered shape from the use of different needle sizes. The simple lace repeat is both written and charted.
Necessary Skills: Knit, purl, cast on, bind off, knitting in the round on circular needles, reading charts.
Materials: Jemma Cowl pattern (available at GYI), 300 yds. fingering weight yarn; US 3, 4 and 5 16” circular needles; ring stitch markers.

FINISHING SCHOOL – A Four Part Series with Carolyn Kern (concludes in November)
Fee: $20 per class or Series of 4/$70 plus materials
Each hour-long class will combine hands-on practice with technique demonstrations. Some classes have suggested homework for knitting small rectangular swatches* for the hands-on practice, but you are encouraged to come learn even if you choose not to make swatches.
*Note: All practice rectangular swatches should be made in a smooth worsted weight yarn in a light color with a compatible needle size.  Block rectangles to reduce curling by washing and drying flat or by steaming with a steam iron (use lowest heat on synthetic fibers).

FINISHING SCHOOL LESSON 1:  Basic Woven Seams
Saturday, October 4; 10:30-11:30 am
Fee: $20 per class or register for all 4 classes/$70 plus materials
There are excellent reasons for using woven seams for garments: they are worked from the right side, are virtually invisible, and will work everywhere on a garment.
Suggested Homework:
(Make 2 swatches for some hands on experience. Make all for even more.)
Make 2:  Cast on 12 stitches. Work 20 rows in stockinette. Bind off.
Make 2:  Cast on 14 stitches. Work 12 rows in stockinette.  Bind off.
Bring your homework knitting, yarn, tapestry needle and small scissors.

⊗♥ GREY ISLANDS MITTS
Thursday, October 9, 6:00-7:30 pm
Grey IslandsFee: $25 plus materials
A perfect fingerless mitt for both women and men. Master small circumference knitting on DPNs, 2 circulars, or Magic Loop. All methods will be discussed in this class.
Necessary Skills: knit, purl, cast on, bind off.
Materials: copy of Laura Aylor’s Grey Islands Mitts pattern (available at GYI), 110 yds. worsted weight yarn, US 6 DPNs, ring stitch marker, tapestry needle. (If you wish to knit the pattern using Magic Loop or 2 circulars, bring appropriate needles in size US 6 in addition to DPNs, which will be used for thumb gusset.)

INTRODUCTION TO RIGID HEDDLE LOOM WEAVING with Linda Mesavage
Saturday, October 11, 10:30 am-12:00 pm
Fee: $25 plus materials
Get started weaving on a rigid heddle loom! Bring your own rigid heddle loom warped up or come ready to learn how to warp a loom for a small scarf project. Parts of the loom, yarn and sett considerations, the warping process, winding shuttles, and weaving basics will be covered. Looms available for rental by advance reservation if you do not have one.

⊗♥ BABY TOP DOWN CARDIGAN
Saturday, October 11 & 18, 1:00-3:30 pm

Everything you want to know about making top down seamless adult sweaters you can learn by practicing on a 6-18 mos. size for a baby. Learn how to add a button band and optional hood.
Necessary Skills: Knit, purl, cast on, bind off, knitting in the round on DPNs.
Materials: copy of Knitting Pure & Simple #982 Babies Neckdown Cardigan pattern (available at GYI), 400-550 yds. worsted weight wool; US 8 and 6 24” circular needles and DPNs, ring stitch markers, tapestry needle, waste yarn, 5-7 buttons.

MAKE YOUR FIRST SOCKS
Thursday, October 16, & 30, 6:00-7:30 pm
Basic SockFee: $50 plus materials
Making your first pair of top down socks on DPNs is the best way to learn “sock anatomy”; guidance for using other methods of circular knitting (Magic Loop or 2 circulars) will be available.
Necessary Skills: Knit, purl, cast on, bind off, knitting in the round using at least one of the above methods.
Materials: copy of Churchmouse Classics Basic Sock pattern (available at GYI), 225 yds. sport weight yarn; US 3 DPNs, tapestry needle.
Homework: Following directions, work cuff for 2” and come to class ready to work heel flap.

FINISHING SCHOOL LESSON 2:  Other Seams & Joins, Including Kitchener Stitch Grafting
Saturday, October 18; 10:30-11:30 am
Fee: $20 per class or register for all 4 classes/$70 plus materials
Class includes an overview of other kinds of seams with a demonstration of 3 needle bind-off and Kitchener Stitch grafting.
Suggested Homework:
(Make 2 swatches for some hands on experience. Make 4 for even more.)
Make 2 or 4:  Cast on 14 stitches. Work 12 rows in stockinette. Do not bind off.
Leave each piece on a needle (straight or circular) if you have enough needles, or place on a stitch holder if not. No blocking required.
Bring your homework knitting, the knitting needles you used (plus a couple extra knitting needles if you have them in the same size), yarn, tapestry needle and small scissors.

NOVEMBER:

FINISHING SCHOOL LESSON 3:  Picking-up Stitches / Button Bands and Neck Bands
Saturday, November 1; 10:30-11:30 am
Fee: $20 per class or register for all 4 classes/$70 plus materials
Picking up stitches for neckbands, armholes, or any edge is usually one of the last steps in finishing a garment.  Doing a good job will improve the appearance of the entire garment.  Students will pick up stitches and work a straight band. Picking up stitches on curved edges will be demonstrated.
Suggested Homework:
If you made any of the rectangles for Lessons 1 or 2, you may bring them to practice picking up stitches.  If you did not, you only need knit one rectangle.
Make 1:  Cast on 14 stitches. Work 20 rows in stockinette. Bind off.
Bring your homework knitting, knitting needles and yarn. You may also bring a finished or unfinished knitting project that has picked up stitches and bands for discussion and/or advice.

♥ BEGINNER STRANDED KNITTING with Carolyn Kern
Saturday, November 1, 1:00-3:00 pm
BorealFee: $40
Let Carolyn teach you the fundamentals of two-handed stranded (Fair Isle) knitting with her original design, the Boreal Headband. Pattern will be provided in class.
Necessary Skills: knit, purl, cast on, bind off, knitting in the round on circular needles.
Materials: 100 yds. main color and 50 yds. contrast color worsted weight wool, US 5 and 7 16” needles, ring stitch marker, tapestry needle.
Homework: Experiment before class holding yarn and needles and knitting with your “other” hand.

⊗♥ MODERN RUSTIC SCARF

The Modern Rustic garter stitch scarf is both easy enough for a beginner and diverting enough to hold the attention of a more advanced knitter, thanks to the simplest type of the intarsia technique used to link two different colors of yarn within the same row.
Necessary Skills: knit, cast on, bind off.
Materials: copy of Modern Rustic pattern (available at GYI), 220 yds. each of two contrasting self-shading or solid color yarns, US 7 and 8 needles, tapestry needle.

♥ WEAVING A ONE-PIECE BAG with Linda Mesavage
Saturday, November 8 & 15  1:30-3:00 pm
Fee: $50
Make a handled bag from one woven length and some easy seaming. Part I will focus on picking yarn, warping the loom, and weaving. Bring woven material to Part II to finish the bag.  Looms available for rental by advance reservation if you do not have one. Project handout will be provided at registration.

♥ MONKEY BREAD HAT
Thursday, November 13, 6:00-7:30 pm
Monkey BreadFee: $25
Anne Hanson’s Monkey Bread Hat and Scarf is a slouchy feminine tam full of soft cables. It’s an elegant way to learn cabling, also a cast on method to make both knit and purl stitches for the ribbed brim.
Necessary Skills: Knit, purl, cast on, bind off, knitting in the round on circular needles.
Materials: copy of Anne Hanson’s Monkey Bread Hat and Scarf pattern (available at GYI), 200 yds. DK weight yarn, US 4- & US 7-16” circular needles, US 7 DPNs, ring stitch marker, cable needle, tapestry needle.

FINISHING SCHOOL LESSON 4:  Buttons & Buttonholes
Saturday, November 15; 10:30-11:30 am
Fee: $20 per class or register for all 4 classes/$70 plus materials
There are many steps to make successfully spaced and neatly executed buttonholes. This class will cover as much on this topic as time permits.
Suggested Homework:
Bring any of the rectangles you made from Lessons 1, 2 or 3, to practice working a buttonhole band.  If you did not take those lessons, you only need knit one rectangle.
Make 1:  Cast on 14 stitches. Work 20 rows in stockinette.  Bind off.
Bring your homework knitting, knitting needles and yarn. You may also bring a finished or unfinished knitting project that has buttons and buttonholes for discussion and/or advice.

⊗ DESIGN YOUR OWN COWL
Thursday, November 20, 6:00-7:30 pm
Fee: $25
Have a favorite stitch pattern you’d like to make into a cowl? In this design workshop we’ll discuss construction methods and techniques to make original cowl designs plus choosing and using different types of yarn. Bring a stitch pattern with you and leave with a cowl pattern for your unique design.

♥ SOPHIE THE BUNNY
Saturday, November 22, 10:30 am-1:30 pm
SophieFee: $45 plus materials
Ysolda Teague’s Sophie is a cute stuffed bunny that knits up without any seaming at all. She’s round and cuddly with long floppy ears and legs that are easy for little hands to hold.
Necessary Skills: Knit, purl, cast on, bind off, knitting in the round on DPNs.
Materials: copy of Sophie pattern (available at GYI), 219 yds. DK or worsted weight yarn, set of US 4 (for DK) or US 5 (for worsted) DPNs, stuffing material.

♥ WYNTER COWL
Saturday, November 22, 2:00-3:30 pm
WynterFee: $25 plus materials
A soft bulky yarn yields a stylish cowl that knits up quickly. This design features reversible cables and is worked flat, then joined with 3-needle bind-off. Pattern will be provided.
Necessary Skills: Knit, purl, cast on, bind off.
Materials: 2 skeins CEY Wynter or Blackthorn or 240 yds. bulky weight yarn, US 10.5 needles, cable needle, tapestry needle.

DECEMBER:

♥ TURBULENCE COWL
Saturday, December 6, 10:30 am-12:00 pm
TurbulenceFee: $25 plus materials
This funky cowl makes the most of small amounts of yarn. Short row wedges and stripes combine to form sculptural, eye-catching waves that keep the knitting fun. A great way to learn the short row technique.
Necessary Skills: Knit, purl, knitting in the round on circular needles.
Materials: Copy of Laura Chao’s Turbulence Cowl pattern (available at GYI), 120 yds. each of 2 colors of worsted weight yarn, US 8 24” circular needle, ring stitch marker, tapestry needle.

⊗ OOPS: FIXING KNITTING MISTAKES
Saturday, December 6, 1:30-2:30 pm
Fee: $15
What do you do when you know something’s wrong but you’re not sure what?  Learn how to repair common mistakes such as dropped stitches and how to find your place in your knitting.
Homework:  Knit a small practice swatch with smooth worsted weight yarn in a light color with a compatible needle size. Cast on 30 stitches and knit in garter stitch for approximately two inches, change to stockinette and knit for another two inches. Leave all stitches on needle – do not bind off. Bring to class along with a “fixer” crochet hook and locking stitch markers.

♥ WEAVING A LENO LACE SCARF with Linda Mesavage
Saturday, December 13, 2014  10:30 am-12:00 pm
Fee: $25 plus materials
Leno (pronounced LEE-no) lace, a pretty open-weave pattern, makes a perfect scarf for a holiday gift or to add to your own wardrobe. Come with a warped loom and leave knowing how to do Leno lace!  Project handout will be provided at registration.

KNITTING 101
Tuesdays, 11:30 am-12:30 pm
FREE
If you’d like to learn how to knit or want help remembering the basics, come to Knitting 101. No advance registration required and no purchase necessary. Plan to spend a half hour practicing how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. Saturday morning Knitting 101 lessons are also available by appointment if Tuesdays aren’t convenient. You’re welcome to attend more than one Knitting 101 session.

  • With the exception of Knitting 101, basic knitting skills are required for all our classes. You must know how to knit, purl, cast on, and bind off. If you’d like help mastering the fundamentals before taking a class, drop in on a free Knitting 101 session.
  • Unless otherwise noted, supplies are not included in fees.
  • In-stock supplies for all classes may be purchased by class participants at a 10% discount. (We really appreciate your buying all your class supplies from us!)
  • Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. Payment is due when you sign-up.  We accept reservations by telephone with payment by Visa, MasterCard, or Discover.
  • A pre-paid class fee will be refunded in full if at least 5 days advance notice is given that you withdrawing.  If fewer than 5 days notice is given, a refund will be made only if we are able to fill your space in the class with another student. Un-refunded fees may be used for future class registrations.
  • Gosh Yarn It! reserves the right to cancel or reschedule classes that do not meet the required minimum enrollment of 3 students. In the event of a cancellation, class fees will be refunded or may be used to register for future classes. Any class cancelled due to inclement weather will be re-scheduled.
  • A missed individual session of a class cannot be refunded or made up. We’ll be happy to try to help you catch-up on what you missed!
