Friday, June 13 and July 11; 10:30 am-12:30 pm
Fee: $40 plus materials
Every knitter should try the amazing BSJ at least once. Elizabeth Zimmermann’s iconic design looks nothing like a sweater until folded and seamed into shape. Gauge will determine garment size, from newborn to 24 months.
Necessary Skills: knit, purl, cast on, bind off.
Materials: Elizabeth Zimmermann’s A-B-C-SJ pattern (available at GYI), 300-500 yds. sport, DK, or worsted weight yarn, 24” circular needle in gauge-appropriate size, locking stitch markers, tapestry needle, waste yarn.

10.8.19BASIC SOCKS KNIT 3 WAYS
Friday, June 20 and 27; 10:30 am-12:30 pm

Saturday, June 21 and 28, 10:30 am-12:30 pm
Fee: $40 plus materials
While making a pair of baby-sized practice socks, you’ll practice three methods for knitting in the round: double point needles, the Magic Loop method, and 2 circular needles.
Necessary Skills: Knit, purl, cast on, bind off, knitting in the round using at least one of the above methods.
Materials: Churchmouse Classics Basic Sock pattern (available at GYI), 100 yds. fingering weight yarn; US 2 needles for your preferred technique (purchase of  needles for other methods optional), tapestry needle.
Homework: Following directions, work cuff for 2” and come to class ready to work heel flap.

YokedCardiganYOKED: A TOP DOWN CARDIGAN
Saturday, June 21 and 28, 1:30-3:30 pm
Fee: $40 plus materials
Hannah Fettig’s adorable Yoked Cardigan is written for a wide range of sizes from infant to adult (17-61” bust). Learn top down seamless sweater basics by practicing with a Yoked in the 12 mos. size.
Necessary Skills: Knit, purl, cast on, bind off, knitting with DPNs.
Materials: Yoked Cardigan pattern (available at GYI), 300 yds. worsted weight wool; US 8 24” circular needles and DPNs, ring markers, tapestry needle, waste yarn, 2 buttons.

FINISHING SCHOOL with Carolyn Kern
LESSON 1: BUTTONHOLES

With expert finisher Carolyn as your guide, you’ll learn the most useful buttonhole techniques as well as perfect placement and sizing tips.

These fingerless mitts work up quickly in worsted weight yarn. Their slipped and cabled stitches will be fun to knit and smart to wear – a great gift with or without the matching Bas Relief Cowl.
Necessary Skills: Knit, purl, cast on, bind off, knitting on DPNs, reading charts.
Materials: 150 yds. worsted weight yarn, US 6 & 8 DPNs, ring markers, tapestry needle, waste yarn.

Martha G.’s Multi-Directional Scarf

MULTI-DIRECTIONAL SCARF

Simple decreases and a unique style of short row knitting create a bold geometric pattern of triangles. Choose a self-striping yarn or from 2 to 6 solid colors for color blocking.
Necessary Skills: Knit, purl, cast on, bind off.
Materials: 300 yds. worsted weight yarn (approx. 50 yds. each of 6 colors for color block option)

Carolyn’s original design Jemma is a lace cowl with picot edging that gets its graceful tapered shape from the use of different needle sizes. The simple lace repeat is both written and charted.

Materials: Jemma Cowl pattern (available at GYI), approx. 300 yds fingering weight yarn; US 3, 4 & 5 16” circular needles; ring markers.

Warning: Mitered squares can be addictive! A form of modular knitting, there is no seaming, and your yarn tails are worked in as you knit, what could be easier? In class you’ll learn the basics of casting on for miters, changing colors, and attaching blocks.
Necessary Skills: Knit, purl, cast on, bind off.
Materials: 100 yds each of 3 colors worsted weight yarn, US 8 needles, split ring or locking marker.

Intarsia is used for “picture knitting,” when you need to use more than one color in a row, but the colors must span longer distances than stranded knitting could accomplish. A sample square with an easy 2-color design will help you master this fun technique. Pattern will be provided.
Necessary Skills: Knit, purl, cast on, bind off.
Materials: approx. 50 yds. each of two contrasting colors worsted weight yarn; US 8 needles.

Carolyn K.’s Annis Shawl

ANNIS SHAWL
Saturday, August 23 and September 13; 10:30 am-12:30 pm
Fee: $40 plus materials
Annis is a delicate crescent shaped shawl that begins at its points and ends at its neckline. A simple 18-row lace pattern is used just once and includes nupps, which can be replaced by beads. Once past the lace section, the shawl knits up quickly in stockinette with short row shaping.
Necessary Skills: Knit, purl, cast on, bind off, reading charts.
Materials: copy of Annis pattern (free on Knitty.com), 400 yds. lace or light fingering weight yarn, US 8 & 10 32” circular needles, ring markers, (optional: approx. 200 size 6/0 beads)

Fee: $20 plus materials
A cowl pattern of colorful squares within squares is made by the log cabin knitting technique, the different yarns joined so that only one seam ever needs to be sewn.
Necessary Skills: Knit, purl, cast on, bind off
Materials: Albers Cowl pattern (available at GYI), fingering weight yarn in 7 colors (see pattern for color placement and amounts), US 2 24 circular needle 24” or longer, tapestry needle.
Homework: Following directions, make center of Square 1.

KNITTING 101
Tuesdays, 11:30 am-12:30 pm

Let us get you started knitting or help you remember the basics. No advance registration required and no purchase necessary. Plan to spend a half hour practicing casting on, the knit and purl stitches, and binding off. Private Knitting 101 lessons also available by appointment. You’re welcome to attend more than one Knitting 101 session.

  • With the exception of Knitting 101, basic knitting skills are required for all our classes. You must know how to knit, purl, cast on, and bind off. If you’d like help mastering the fundamentals before taking a class, drop in on a free Knitting 101 session (see above). Unless otherwise noted, supplies are not included in class fees.
  • In-stock supplies for all classes may be purchased by class participants at a 10% discount. (We really appreciate your buying all your class supplies from us!)
  • Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. Payment is due when you sign-up.  We accept reservations by telephone with payment by Visa, MasterCard, or Discover.
  • A pre-paid class fee will only be refunded if at least 5 days advance notice is given that you will not be attending.  If fewer than 5 days notice is given, a refund will only be made if we are able to fill your space in the class with another student.   An un-refunded class fee is transferable and may be used to register for future classes.
  • A missed individual session of a class cannot be refunded or made up (but we’ll be happy to try to help you catch-up on what you missed).
  • Gosh Yarn It! reserves the right to cancel or reschedule classes that do not meet the required minimum enrollment of 3 students.  Any class cancelled due to inclement weather will be re-scheduled.
