Rowan Mystery Afghan Knit-Along

We know a lot of you have been eyeing our new Rowan Pure Wool Worsted, a 100% wool superwash, waiting for the right project to come along for an excuse to play with that gorgeous Rowan palette of 50 colors. Well, it’s here!

Rowan has announced a Pure Wool Worsted Mystery Afghan KAL from master designer Martin Storey. The first of eight clues will be released Monday, April 21, with new clues posted weekly. We are DOING THIS!

The finished squares are approx. 8”(20cm x 20cm) square. The overall layout is 6 by 8 squares (48 in total) = approx. 47”(120cm) x 63”(160cm) plus trim.

If you choose to use all of Storey’s 17 recommended shades each design is knit 3 times in one shade and 3 in another. In week 9 Storey will show how to create the trim. In week 10 the final instructions for making-up the blanket will be released.

Beginner knitter? Not a problem! Rowan says there will be online videos to support the pattern, along with basic techniques like casting on. You can also choose to make a smaller blanket by making 3 squares of each design instead of 6 (24 total, arranged 6 x 4).

The official shopping list for the 17-color version is here. Also included are options for a 9-color, two 5-color, and four 2-color versions.

The Ravelry project page is here.

The Ravelry thread for the KAL with many more details and color choices (but also lots of “chat”) is here. The Rowan moderator has mentioned there will be prizes but has not elaborated.

Here at GYI, we’ll offer support for each week’s pattern during regular Stitch & Spin hours, Thursday, 6-8 pm, and again on Saturday afternoons. (Keep in mind, if you purchase all your yarn at GYI for the KAL, your afghan can be used as a project for Summer Camp – yes, it’s almost time for camp!)

Jill pulled 16 of the 17 colors off the shelves (the only one missing is a light grey heather that’s on order and will be back in stock next week). Here they are:

You really need to see this palette in person! There are so many colors of Pure Wool Worsted to choose from that we can help you create a custom color scheme, too. And do check out the Ravelry thread (above). This is a global KAL, with people joining every hour, and there are some great color suggestions that have already been posted there. We’ll post links here on the blog to the patterns as soon as they’re released. We can’t wait for April 21!

  1. I’m a really late starter for this after toying with Kaffe’s KAL, I decided to do Martin’s as I love the textured squares. I do have my own colourway in mind, but would appreciate some help in deciding!

  2. Thanks! I just need to decide which colours to start with for the 1st 6 squares
